General information
Abilify is prescribed for the treatment of such conditions as major depressive disorder, schizophrenia, manic and mixed episodes associated with bipolar disorder in adults and children and adolescents and also of irritability associated with autistic disorder in children. It works showing partial agonist at the D2 receptor, it is also a partial agonist at the 5-HT1A receptor, and also displays an antagonist profile at the 5-HT2A receptor.
Directions
It is recommended to take the medicine as it was prescribed by your doctor. Take it with or without food. The recommended initial dose is 10-15 mg.
Precautions
Abilify shouldn't be used by middle aged people with psychosis and children. Do not take alcoholic beverages. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Patients with diabetes mellitus should monitor blood sugar levels regularly.
Contraindications
Breastfeeding women and patients with hypersensitivity to the medicine can't use it.
Possible side effect
Side effects can be the following: nausea, vomiting, constipation, headache, dizziness, nervousness, sleeplessness, restlessness, tremors, cough, headache, lightheadedness, rash, runny nose, weakness, and weight gain, risk of stroke and ministroke; neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) which symptoms include fever, rigid muscles, confusion; tardive dyskinesia (TD) which symptoms include uncontrolled and abnormal movements of body parts.
Drug interaction
Abilify can interact with the following medicines: blood pressure drugs, carbamazepine, fluoxetine, ketoconazole, paroxetine, rifampin, Phenobarbital, fluconazole, verapamil, itaconazole, cimetedine, diltiazem, indinavir, quinidine and others. Inform your doctor about all prescribed and over-the-counter medications.
Missed dose
Abilify is taken once daily, so take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If the next dose is within 12 hours, do not take the missed dose and resume your normal dosing schedule. Never double the dose of this medication.
Overdose
If you think you have overdosed the medicine seek emergency medical help at once. The overdose symptoms are vomiting, somnolence, tremor, hypertension, hypokalemia, tachycardia, convulsion, etc.
Storage
Store the medicine at room temperature in a tight dry container out of reach of children and pets. Do not use after expiration term.
